Story 1 : Where are you most likely to be killed by a car in Philadelphia? (Hint: Not Center City)

This is the story where I find passion for data journalism. An analysis of five years of data on traffic volume and fatalities shows that areas of North Philadelphia have the highest likelihood of traffic fatalities, when measured as a rate based on traffic volume.
I collected traffic data from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and fatality data from Philadelphia Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems. I cleaned and joined the two data sets in SQL and calculated the death rates in each neighborhood. Finally, I visualizaed it as an interactive map using ArcGIS.

Story 2 :E-Learning Platforms a Bright Spot Amid COVID-19’s Economic Quake

I always look to use more reliable data sources for my reporting, and this is the first time I tapped Google Trends. Combining the search interest data from Google with Coursera’s enrollment data, the chart shows a booming online learning scene during the pandemic.

Story 2 :China Opens Door Wider to Plant-Based Food With Starbucks Push

The story is about China’s alternative protein market. I made queries on PitchBook, a paid database monitoring private equity and venture capital deals. This is my go-to database when reporting the private sector.

Story 4 : Investors Continue Push For Accountability After McDonald’s Sues Ex-CEO

I want to make the point that CEOs’ pay has grown out of proportion to the economy. I collected data on CEO's compensation from the Economic Policy Institute, and computed it with their typical workers’ pay and the stock market.

Story 5: Meatpacking Robots May Rise in U.S. Due to COVID-19 Labor Shortages

We did many stories on COVID-19’s impacts on private investments, and I like this one because the topic gave me the chance to work with robust government data, rather than private data whose scope is often limited.
